Sakurajima
桜島
Sakurajima is an active volcano rising from Kagoshima Bay, a short ferry ride from the city. The Sakurajima Visitor Center near the ferry terminal is a good first stop. Its exhibits explain past eruptions, how the volcano formed, its plants and disaster prevention. The center also has a shop with local products, sightseeing pamphlets and bicycle rental.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- The suggested sightseeing route around the island by loop bus takes about 6 hours (the ferry from Kagoshima Port is about 15 minutes each way), so plan prayer times for a long day out.
- Yogan Nagisa Park has a 100-m-long foot bath, one of the longest in Japan, where only your feet go in the water.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
- Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Kagoshima and the verified places to pray nearby.
- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
