Sengan-en is the former villa and garden of the powerful Shimadzu family, lords of the Satsuma domain. It was built in 1658 and looks out over the sea to the volcano Sakurajima. Visitors can walk the large garden, see the bamboo grove and pavilions, and tour the old house. The area became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 for its role in Japan's modernization.
