Tips for Muslim visitors
- For the sand bath you change into a rented cotton yukata (robe) in the changing room, with nothing worn underneath according to the guide. Plan for this if you want to stay more covered.
- You lie down and staff cover you with sand heated to 50–55°C. About ten minutes is usually enough, though it varies from person to person.
- At most public hot springs in Japan people bathe naked, in baths separated by gender, and swimwear is usually not allowed. If you prefer privacy, look for a private bath (kashikiri-buro), an in-room bath or a foot bath.
- Wash your body at the shower area before entering the bath. Many visitors who want to stay covered choose a foot bath instead.
