Yashima

屋島

Yashima is a flat-topped volcanic plateau on the east side of Takamatsu, about 300 meters above sea level. It is famous as a ancient battlefield of the Genpei War, including the famous story of the archer Nasu-no-Yoichi. Today it is a popular viewpoint over the Seto Inland Sea, the sunset and the night lights of Takamatsu. At the top, the Yashimaru building has an observation deck, cafés and shops.

Yashimaru is open 11:00–17:00 (last order 16:30).

Yashimaru is closed on Tuesdays.

Getting there

The Yashima Sanjo Shuttle Bus runs from Kotoden Yashima Station to Shikoku Mura and the top of Yashima.

  • Yashimaru is a 200-meter-long glass-walled building with an observation deck over the Seto Inland Sea.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • Yashimaji Temple is number 84 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Visitors may simply look around.
  • A mountain path links three viewing points on top of Yashima.
  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
