Kankakei Gorge (Shodoshima)
寒霞渓
Kankakei is a deep valley in the mountains of Shodoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea. It is known as one of the three most beautiful valleys in Japan. An aerial tramway runs between tall, rugged rock walls up to the summit station. The view is especially beautiful in the autumn leaf season.

Aerial tramway hours change by season; for example, 8:30–17:00 from March 21 to October 20.
From October 21 to November 30 (autumn leaves) it opens earlier, 8:00–17:00; from December 21 to March 20 it is 8:30–16:30.
- Getting there
Shodoshima is reached from Takamatsu by ferry (about 60 min) or high-speed boat (about 35 min, adults 1,400 yen).
- Time needed
The aerial tramway ride to Sancho (summit) Station takes about 5 minutes.

Good to know
- There are two parking lots: the 1st lot is paid and the 2nd lot is free.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- The ropeway takes about 5 minutes. If you walk instead, the Omote trail takes about 1 hour up and 45 minutes down.
- The summit restaurant serves Shodoshima somen noodles and curry rice with an Olive Beef croquette.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
