Kitakami Tenshochi Park

北上市立公園展勝地

Tenshochi is a city park beside the Kitakami River in Kitakami City and one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in Tohoku. The park opened in 1921, when cherry trees were planted by a local group. Today about 10,000 cherry trees line the river for around 2 km. During the spring festival, visitors can ride a horse-drawn carriage along the cherry tree paths.

Opening hours: The park is open all day.
Admission: Parking costs 500 yen per car and 3,000 yen per large bus.
Getting there: About a 20-minute walk from the east exit of JR Kitakami Station.

Good to know

The park has about 10,000 cherry trees and 100,000 azaleas.
During the cherry blossom festival, you can ride a horse-drawn carriage along the cherry tree paths.
Using fire (such as cooking with open flames) is not allowed in the park.

Tips for Muslim visitors

The row of cherry trees along the river is about 2 km long.
From the station it is about a 20-minute walk to the entrance of the cherry tree-lined path.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
