Geibikei Gorge

Geibikei Gorge

猊鼻渓

Geibikei is a gorge about 2 km long in Ichinoseki City, made by the Satetsu River cutting through limestone. Cliffs about 100 m high rise on both sides. Visitors ride flat boats on the calm river while the boatman sings the folk song "Geibi Oiwake". It is especially colorful in autumn, and heated kotatsu boats run in winter.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • The boat cruise takes about 90 minutes round trip and includes getting off at a sandbar for a short walk to a larger waterfall; plan prayer times around it.
  • Meals can be served on the boat; ask about the ingredients when booking.
  • Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
  • Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
  • Plan your visit around prayer times. Below are today's prayer times for Iwate and the verified places to pray nearby.
