Hokkaido Jingu

北海道神宮

Hokkaido Jingu is a large Shinto shrine in Sapporo. It was built in 1869 by order of Emperor Meiji, and it has more than 150 years of history. The shrine is linked to the settlement and development of Hokkaido. In spring, about 1,400 cherry trees and 250 plum trees bloom on the grounds.

Visitor information

Opening hours: Gate hours: Apr–Oct 6:00–17:00; March 7:00–17:00; Nov–Dec and Jan 8–Feb 7:00–16:00.
Admission: Entry is free.
Getting there: About 15 minutes on foot from Maruyama-Koen Subway Station.

Tips for Muslim visitors

The shrine grounds cover about 18 hectares and are about a 15-minute walk from Maruyama-koen Subway Station, so allow time for walking.
During the Hokkaido-jingu Shrine Festival in June, a procession of about 1,200 people carries portable shrines; visitors can simply watch.
Shinto shrines are open to everyone. Bowing, clapping and washing at the purification basin are optional; you can simply look around.
Shrines are usually busiest at New Year and during festivals. Early morning is often the calmest time to visit.
Charms, fortune slips and votive tablets are religious items. You do not need to buy or use them.
