Asahiyama Zoo

旭山動物園

Asahiyama Zoo is a city-run zoo in Asahikawa, in central Hokkaido. It is known around the world for its 'behavioral displays', which let visitors see animals moving and living much as they would in the wild. You can watch each animal's natural skills and energy up close. The zoo is open in both summer and winter, with different opening hours for each season.

Late April to mid-October: 9:30–17:15. Mid-October to early November: 9:30–16:30.

Mid-November to early April (winter): 10:30–15:30.

Closed

Closed November 4–10 and December 30–January 1. Hours may be shorter depending on the season.

Admission

Adults: 1,000 yen. Children 12 and under: free.

Getting there

About 40 minutes by bus from JR Asahikawa Station, or about 20 minutes by car from Asahikawa Kita IC on the Hokkaido Expressway.

Tips for Muslim visitors

A prayer space is available on request at the zoo's support center. Japan's national tourism organization recommends contacting the zoo a few days in advance so it can be prepared.
The zoo's famous penguin walk is held only during the snowy season.
