Daisho-in Temple

Daisho-in Temple

大聖院

Daisho-in is a Buddhist temple at the foot of Mt. Misen on Miyajima Island. It is said to have been founded in 806 by the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), and it has the longest history of any temple on Miyajima. It is a head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism and had close ties with Itsukushima Shrine. Visitors walk among its halls, including the Kannon Hall with an eleven-faced Kannon statue.

Tips for Muslim visitors

  • The Maniden is a prayer hall used for ceremonies; visitors should not enter the building while a prayer ceremony is in progress, and can simply look around at other times.
  • Inside the Maniden, a steep set of stairs leads to the second floor.
  • Buddhist temples welcome visitors of all faiths. You can enjoy the buildings and gardens without joining any prayer, burning incense or buying charms.
  • Many halls ask you to take off your shoes. Wear socks and shoes that are easy to slip off, and keep a bag for your shoes if none is provided.
  • Photography is often not allowed inside halls. Follow the signs and ask staff if you are unsure.
