Sainokawara Park, Kusatsu

西の河原公園

Sainokawara Park is a hot spring park in Kusatsu Onsen. Milky white hot water flows through it like a river, and steam rises from the ground in many places. Along the stream there are free foot baths, and a spot called Oni no Chagama, named for its steam and sound. In the park is the Sainokawara Open-Air Bath, one of the largest outdoor baths in Japan. The park is lit up at night.

Opening hours

Open-air bath: April 1–November 30, 7:00–20:00 (last entry 19:30).

Open-air bath: December 1–March 31, 9:00–20:00 (last entry 19:30).

Admission

Open-air bath: adults 800 yen; children (age 3 to elementary school) 400 yen.

Getting there

About 10 minutes on foot from Yubatake in the center of Kusatsu.

Good to know

The park itself is open 24 hours and free to walk around; the open-air bath is charged separately.
The open-air bath has men's and women's areas, about 500 square meters in total.

Tips for Muslim visitors

Sainokawara Onsen, the large open-air bath in the park, is separated into pools for men and women.
The bath can hold 100 people and is large and open, with views of the surrounding forest.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
