Fukiware Falls
吹割の滝
Fukiware Falls is a waterfall on the Katashina River in Numata City. The river has worn away the soft rock, making many cracks, and the water drops about 7 meters along a width of 30 meters. It is sometimes called the Niagara of the Orient. The falls are a national Natural Monument and Place of Scenic Beauty, and a walking path runs through the gorge.
Visitor information

Closed in winter, from mid-December to late March. The walking path is also closed at night.

Viewing is free. Parking is charged.
- Getting there
By car, about 20 minutes from Numata IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway along Route 120 toward Oze.
About 40 minutes by bus from JR Numata Station (Joetsu Line).
- Time needed
About 1 hour for the falls and the walking path.

Good to know
- The path has no railings and can be slippery. Wear non-slip shoes and never step inside the white lines.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- Walking around including the promenade takes about 1 hour.
- The promenade has no fences; the section from Masutobi Falls to Fukiware Falls is narrow and can be slippery after rain, so wear comfortable non-slip shoes.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
