Miyagawa Morning Market
宮川朝市
The Miyagawa Morning Market is held every morning along the east bank of the clear Miyagawa River in Takayama. Takayama's morning markets go back to around 1820, and the market moved to the riverside in 1962. Local stalls sell fresh vegetables and fruit, mountain plants, pickles, folk crafts and seasonal flowers. It is a lively place to stroll before exploring the old town.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- As the name says, the morning market is open only in the morning, so it is easiest to stay nearby the night before and walk there.
- Stalls sell local vegetables and fruit, wild mountain vegetables, pickles, folk crafts and seasonal flowers along about 700 meters.
- In winter the market is quieter than in the busy summer and autumn.
- Street food and market snacks often contain pork, lard or alcohol (such as mirin or sake), even when this is not obvious. Ask before you buy.
- Some markets and shopping streets ask visitors not to eat while walking. Eat at the stall or in a rest area.
