Tonohetsuri
塔のへつり
Tonohetsuri is a line of tall, tower-like rock cliffs along the Okawa (Aga) River in Shimogo Town. The river shaped them over about one million years of erosion and weathering. The site became a national Natural Monument in 1943. Visitors walk under rock overhangs and cross a suspension bridge; wild wisteria hangs from the rocks in early summer, and the leaves turn red in autumn.

Good to know
- The suspension bridge (Fujimi-bashi) is closed in winter. In 2026 it reopened on March 16.
- While the bridge is closed, you can still see the snowy rocks from the viewing deck.
- In winter, only a few shops are open.
- Best seasons: wisteria in early summer and autumn leaves in autumn.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- At the foot of the cliff there is a small shrine dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Visitors may simply look around.
- The scenery is best enjoyed by crossing the nearby suspension bridge.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
