Kokura Castle (Kitakyushu)
小倉城
Kokura Castle in Kitakyushu was built by Hosokawa Tadaoki over about seven years from 1602. The main keep was lost in a fire in 1837 and in the Kokura War of 1866, and local citizens rebuilt it in 1959. The keep has a rare "karazukuri" style, with the fifth floor larger than the fourth. Inside, there are exhibits such as restored armor and a model of the old keep, a short video theater, and views of the castle town and the Kanmon Strait from the top floor. The keep is lit up after sunset.
