Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
太宰府天満宮
Dazaifu Tenmangu is a large Shinto shrine in Dazaifu City, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, who is honored as the god of learning. It is the leading shrine of about 12,000 Tenmangu shrines in Japan and has around 1,100 years of history. Visitors can see the vermilion main shrine, its gardens, a treasure house and many old camphor trees. A sacred plum tree called Tobi-ume stands to the right of the main shrine, and the plum blossoms are best from late January to early March.
