Tojinbo Cliffs
東尋坊
Tojinbo is a line of rugged sea cliffs on the Sea of Japan coast in Sakai City. The cliffs are made of huge rock columns that stretch for about 1 km. They are a National Natural Monument. Visitors walk along the rocks, look out from Tojinbo Tower, or take a sightseeing boat to see the cliffs from the sea.
Visitor information
- Opening hours
The cliffs can be visited 24 hours a day. Tojinbo Tower is open 9:00–17:00 (until 16:30 in winter).
- Admission
Entry to the cliffs is free (parking is extra). Tojinbo Tower observation deck: adults 500 yen, children 300 yen.
Sightseeing cruise: adults 1,800 yen, children 900 yen; runs 9:00–16:00 (until 15:30 in winter).
- Getting there
About 15 minutes by Keifuku Bus bound for Tojinbo from Echizen Railway Mikuni Station (get off at the last stop).
About 45 minutes by Keifuku Bus bound for Tojinbo from JR Awaraonsen Station.

Tips for Muslim visitors
- The Tojinbo sightseeing cruise, which shows the cliffs from the sea, takes about 30 minutes.
- Waves tend to be high in winter, and the cruise may change its boarding point or be cancelled due to weather. Check the operating status before you go.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
