Dogo Onsen Honkan

道後温泉本館

Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, with a history of about 3,000 years. Its main bathhouse, Dogo Onsen Honkan, is said to have inspired the bathhouse in an award-winning film. Inside is a maze of hallways, rooms and staircases. It also has the Yushinden, private rooms and a bath that were built only for the imperial family.

Visitor information

Opening hours: Open 6:30–23:30 (last admission 22:30).
Admission: Kami-no-yu bath on the ground floor: adults 410 yen, children (2–11) 160 yen.

The Yushinden, decorated private rooms built for the imperial family, can be toured for a fee.
The bath water is a mix from 18 different springs to keep the right temperature.

Tips for Muslim visitors

Men and women bathe separately at Honkan, with separate changing rooms on the right (men) and left (women).
If you prefer not to use a shared bath, the nearby Asuka-no-Yu bathhouse has special private bathing rooms on its 2nd floor; reservations open 90 days in advance.
At most public hot springs in Japan people bathe naked, in baths separated by gender, and swimwear is usually not allowed. If you prefer privacy, look for a private bath (kashikiri-buro), an in-room bath or a foot bath.
Wash your body at the shower area before entering the bath. Many visitors who want to stay covered choose a foot bath instead.
