Oyama Senmaida Rice Terraces

大山千枚田

Oyama Senmaida in Kamogawa is a set of 375 rice paddies lined up like steps on a steep 32,000 square metre slope. It is said to be the closest traditional terraced rice field to Tokyo and is listed among Japan's 100 best terraced rice fields. A local preservation society looks after the fields. Visitors come to see the green and golden paddies and the countryside views.

Getting there

About 25 minutes by car from Awa-Kamogawa Station on the JR Sotobo Line.

From Tokyo it is about 1 hour 30 minutes by car.

A light-up event is usually held in October and is one of the most popular events in Kamogawa.

Tips for Muslim visitors

From the Oyama Senmaida Iriguchi bus stop it is about a 15-minute walk to the rice terraces.
The official site suggests a visit of about 15 to 45 minutes.
Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.
