Hakkoda Ropeway
八甲田ロープウェー
The Hakkoda Ropeway carries visitors up the Hakkoda mountains, a group of volcanoes south of Aomori City. From the cabin and the summit you can enjoy wide mountain views. In summer and autumn, visitors walk the Gourd Line trail near the summit station. In winter the area is known for snow-covered trees called "snow monsters".

March to early November: first car up 9:00, last up 16:20. Mid-November to February: last car up 15:40.

Closed for annual maintenance in early November; service may stop in strong winds or bad weather.

Adult round trip 2,200 yen; one way 1,400 yen (junior high and older).
- Time needed
The ride takes about 10 minutes one way.

Good to know
- There is no hiking route down from the summit station to the base station.
- Mid-October is very busy, with waits of up to 90 minutes.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- Near the top station there are two short walking courses through scattered wetlands, taking about 30 or 60 minutes.
- The Kenashitai Wetland course starting from the ropeway takes about 3 hours (5.8 km); it is a beginner mountain route, but sturdy gear such as hiking boots is advised.
- The ropeway runs year-round but is suspended in strong winds.
- Natural sites may have few facilities. Bring water, a travel prayer mat and a qibla app, and check the weather; mountains and lakes can be much colder than the city.
- Restrooms for wudu can be far apart on trails. Many Muslim travellers carry a small water bottle for wudu.

- Food stalls and shops near popular sights usually do not have halal certification. Check the ingredients, or choose from the verified places on this site.
